If you have fruit trees, you probably don’t need the team at PlantNet to tell you how annoying pests can be. If left unchecked, they can quickly become a real issue for your fruit trees, destroying your chances at picking ripe seasonal fruits. The team at PlantNet have been working in the horticulture industry for decades, so we’ve come across our fair share of insects and various pests. In that time, we’ve learned the best, most effective ways of preventing pests from destroying plants and growing fruit.
We’ve got a range of traps, baits, and fruit tree pest control methods available on our site so that you can have less harmful critters attacking your crops and more fruit in your fruit bowl!
Fruit Flies
Fruit flies are one of the most irritating pests, particularly if you’re growing your miniature fruit trees indoors. Fruit flies are small and brownish-red. They damage the fruit as it matures, and you can see where fruit flies have been as the fruit goes soft as it ripens.
One of the most common forms of pest prevention is fruit fly netting. The small fibres will keep out most pests except mites and thrip. It’s straightforward to install too. You can either use bamboo sticks and jars, PVC pipe structures, or large permanent structures for full-grown trees. If you need a short-term solution, you can also cover the tree by draping the netting over it and securing the net at the base. After a while, the tree will grow through the mesh, so it’s best to think of a more long-term layout for your fruit fly netting.
Possums And Bats
While Australian native wildlife is adorable, they can be a menace if you’re trying to grow your own fruit at home. While fruit fly netting will also work, VegeNet works perfectly for seasonal fruits. It covers the plant while it’s bearing fruit, so you can leave it uncovered for the rest of the year. It will stop little paws and teeth from getting into your fruit and prevent an assault from the air.
Caterpillars And Moths
There is a wide range of caterpillars and moth larvae out there waiting for the right season to feast on your fruits. Codling moths, apple moths, oriental fruit moths; we have solutions for everything.
- Traps. Codling moth, light brown apple moth, and oriental fruit moth traps use pheromones to attract the bug. The sticky sides of the trap catch and kill the pest off, thereby reducing their numbers. It’s a great way of assisting with the prevention of specific caterpillars and moth larvae from eating your fruit.
- Organic sprays. Most pests don’t enjoy the scent or taste of garlic. Try mixing chopped garlic with 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil, and 2 teaspoons of detergent in 500ml of water. This should help deter the bugs from the fruit if applied during early pest development.
- Garden netting. One way to prevent the adult moths from laying eggs in your fruit is to set up garden netting. The moths will be far too large to fly through, so your fruit will remain safe and sound.
Mites, Scale Bug, Weevils, and Beetles
The types of pests your fruit attracts will all depend on the kind of fruit you’re growing. It’s essential to have a list of tailored solutions for each of your plants, as no two will be the same.
- Mites: These pests don’t like garlic during their early development, so try mixing chopped garlic with 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil, and 2 teaspoons of detergent in 500ml of water.
- Scale: Smother scale in paraffin oil or a soap-based product while the bug is in its dormancy phase.
Weevils: These little bugs won’t typically go for the fruit. They prefer older, established leaves. The best method of destroying weevils is simple; squash it. - Other insects: Most bugs won’t enjoy the garlic solution. However, if you’re struggling to rid yourself of pests, make sure to take a photo of them and take it to your local nursery or send the picture to PlantNet. Someone will be able to identify it and provide you with a solution. We also recommend that you join Graham Ross’ Garden Clinic Club, where a qualified horticulturist will be able to answer your questions.
