A sensational new selection – Purple Jewel™ leaves emerge as young, green new growth and then turn quickly to incredibly deep, shining, wine-red, with gorgeous, soft, blue-mauve undersides. With the sun shining behind them they make a stunning sight. This display of colour continues until late Autumn, with leaves remaining on the trees much longer than usual variety selections.
This is not a well known Prunus but with its larger, more handsome leaves it should supersede other purple leafed Prunus such as Prunus nigra and its cultivars. As with most foliage trees, Purple Jewel’s colours will be more dynamic in open, sunny aspects. This variety has an erect growth habit and is a hardy tree that will withstand heavy frosts.
